Practicum 1 - Jeff

You like video games, right? Of course you do. For my practicum assignment I am focusing on networked console gaming. The big three video game consoles right now are Nintendo's Wii, Sony's Playstation 3, and Microsoft's Xbox 360, and all of them have an online community. In the United States, Nintendo and Sony offer their services for free, while Microsoft charges about $60 per year for access to their service. I decided to stick with Microsoft's service, Xbox LIVE. Lucky me. I already have an account.

When you create a profile on the Xbox, you are prompted to create a user name and invited to create an avatar in the likeness of yourself, or not yourself. My name, or "gamertag" is Celetyr, but most people online can't read that so I am often addressed "Celery," like the vegetable. Here I would post a picture of my avatar, but capturing screenshots or video from a video game console is kind of tricky, so instead I give you a cat playing Xbox. I promise more relevant images/video in the future.

Rather than focus on a single game in the Xbox LIVE lineup, such as Halo or Call of Duty, I will survey some of the most popular titles in different Genres (not in order):

*Ace Combat 6, a modern jet combat simulator
*Battlefield: Bad Company 2, a large scale shooter
*Burnout: Paradise, a racing game featuring ridiculous crashes
*Red Dead Redemption, a western themed adventure game
*Tom Clancy's EndWar, a voice commanded strategy game

I was also considering adding FIFA, a soccer game, to the mix, but I don't want to spread things too thin. In future posts I will not only comment on the above games and how gamers interact differently in each one, but I will also look at different aspects of the greater Xbox LIVE service and see what it has to offer.

  2. I love your cat picture! It made me literally LOL. I haven't gotten a lot of use out of my Xbox since the last game I played hardcore on there was Call of Duty 4 and Trivial Pursuit (hahah) Do you have any suggestions?

I like first person shooter games and small adventure games like Little Big Planet for example.

  3. Hey Paloma,

As far as shooters go Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is a blast, and I will totally play it with you if you pick it up. Halo: Reach is also still very popular, but I've never played it. If you're looking for something new, Crysis 2 just came out and is supposed to be great.

As for small adventure games you might want to check out the Xbox LIVE Arcade. Some popular adventures there are Braid, Super Meat Boy, and Castle Crashers, and go for 800, 1200, and 1200 microsoft points, respectively.

  4. Thanks Jeff! I'll let you know if I end up getting Battlefield. I guess it was probably not a good idea to prematurely get excited about playing video games since we all have the end of the semester work load to deal with haha.
