Prior to this assignment, I had never registered as a member. I had never followed anyone, subscribed to their channel or liked/commented on any videos.
I've always been hesitant to sign up for youtube because it's an environment where people get pretty heated. Leaving any type of comment leaves room for people to get angry and retaliate, and a large percentage of videos posted have arguments under their comment section. Hopefully I will have a pleasant experience during this assignment!
I never understood why people joined youtube and what was all entailed. Since joining, I have just been spending time getting acquainted with how the site works, channels and how to interact with people.
I found it interesting that you noted that people get pretty heated on YouTube. I have found this as well. For our fellow Badgers if you go through and look at the comments on the "Teach Me How to Bucky" site, there is constant negativity mixed in with the positive comments. So what is it that makes people want to be argumentative on social networking sites.
ReplyDeleteA website that I found when I was looking into this said "Social networking sites make cyberbullying, a type of bullying that occurs online, easier and more public than bullying through other online activities such as email and instant messaging. A 2009 study found that 17.3% of middle school students have been victims of cyberbullying. [7] Victims often experience a drop in grades, decreased self-esteem, and other symptoms of depression. [8]"
I believe that social networking sites such as YouTube make it easier for people to leave bolder comments, knowing they won't be held accountable face-to-face with the person they are interacting with. I also feel this is especially relevant on a site like YouTube where you don't have a solidified network of "friends" that you know typically. Comments usually come from users that you don't know.
